Amazon has offered its App Store for Android users and more devices but now it is going to fully focus on its own platforms for apps.
Android users have a few months left before the Amazon App store goes away
Amazon is on a closing spree lately, probably to cut its operating costs in areas where it can afford to make the changes. And the latest news says that Amazon is shutting down the App store for Android devices later this year.
The company has offered its App Store as an alternative to Google’s Play Store for many years but now it seems that Amazon has realised its strategy should be more focused on its own devices and platforms.
Amazon App Store Shutting Down But Why
The company has confirmed that the Android App store will stop working on August 20 this year. Amazon has already informed the developers to stop submitting their new apps to the store.
We are not really surprised that Amazon is closing shop on the App store for Android users who have predominantly relied on the Play Store to install new apps and games for their devices.
Android devices have the freedom to sideload app stores like Amazon and not completely depend on Google’ preloaded app store but millions have done exactly that for years. So, why keep an App store running, which barely gets the mileage, and now Amazon finally decides to end the product for these users. However, the App Store will continue to be a big part of its own devices like the Fire TV, Fire HD tablet and more.
In addition to the App Store, Amazon is also discontinuing the Amazon Coins programme which is no longer available to the consumers. These coins helped people buy apps and games from the Amazon App Store and if any of you still have some coins unused in the account, Amazon will refund that back to them. The company is also going to be busy later this month with its Alexa AI event where we could finally get a glimpse of the new-look voice assistant with a big AI twist.
