Eyeing to dismantle the Aam Aadmi Party’s Delhi bastion in a high-stakes poll battle in the national capital, the BJP is likely to announce free electricity for the residents upto 300 units, sources said on Thursday.
This will be 100 units more than what the current AAP government provides to the people of the city, which has been termed as “freebies” on many occasions to woo voters.
After consecutive Assembly poll drubbing in Delhi in 2015 and 2020 at the hands of AAP, the BJP is keen to breach the AAP’s fortress in the city in the February 5 elections.
Free Electricity For Religious Places Likely: Sources
According to sources, the saffron camp is also planning to announce free electricity in religious places like temples and Gurudwara upto 500 units.
The party is also likely to promise free and clean drinking water via pipeline.
Based on its pleasant experiences with women-centric schemes, which are widely regarded as one of the main reasons for the party’s resounding victories in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the BJP is likely to announce schemes similar to Ladli Behna Yojana in Delhi, sources said.
The BJP is yet to release its manifesto for the polls and is expected to unveil the same by the end of the week.
The party has often voiced its concerns about the freebie politics prevalent in the country, however, has also made it clear that no public welfare schemes, floated by the AAP government, including free electricity and free bus rides for women, would be stopped if it gets power in Delhi.
Chief Election Commissioner On Freebies
CEC Rajiv Kumar referred to a court judgment on the subject that had held freebies were not “disallowed”, and said his hands were tied as the matter was subjudice.
“What is freebie for me may be an entitlement for someone else… It is very difficult to define what a freebie is,” Kumar said.
“Our proforma is on our website, this is high time it is accepted and legal answers are found but our hands are tied at the moment because the matter is subjudice,” he added.
The Delhi Assembly polls are slated for February 5. The counting of votes will take place on February 8.
