China – Jean-Noël Barrot’s meeting with his counterpart (15.02.25)

M. Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, had a meeting on Saturday 15 February with Mr Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs of the Chinese Communist Party and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

The two ministers emphasized their commitment to bilateral dialogue between France and China in order to propose responses to the current crises. Among other things, they discussed Ukraine, trade and regional crises.

On Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the [French] Minister recalled that there could be no lasting peace solution unless the Ukrainians and Europeans were involved in it. On trade tensions, the Minister stressed the urgent need to return to a calm relationship between the European Union and China, for everyone’s benefit.

He emphasized that a swift solution must be found to China’s anti-dumping investigation into European cognac and brandy. The two ministers talked about tensions in the Indo-Pacific and agreed on the need to promote an agenda of peace and stability in the Middle East.

The Minister reaffirmed France’s desire to strengthen the partnership with China regarding global issues, particularly the climate and biodiversity. The Third UN Ocean Conference, in Nice, will provide an opportunity to demonstrate these common ambitions.

The two ministers agreed to continue close dialogue on all these issues, in particular during an upcoming visit by the Minister to China.
