Cleaning of Amayizhanjan Canal’s tunnel part under Central rail station completed: Minister

The cleaning up of the tunnel part of the Amayizhanjan Canal that passes under the railway track near the Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station has been completed, Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine said after a visit to the area on Wednesday. The cleaning of the remaining part which extends to about 65 m is expected to be completed within a month.

The department has taken up de-siltation of the canal at a cost of ₹63 lakh, utilised from the funds for the city flood alleviation project. The cleaning process began last October. Despite interruptions due to rain, the legacy waste which had collected inside the tunnel was completely removed by this week. Around 1,200 cubic metre of waste was removed from the 117-metre tunnel stretch of the canal.

Protective wall

Administrative sanction has been accorded to rebuild the protective wall of the canal from Nellikuzhi Bridge, near Anayara, at a cost of ₹12 crore. Protective barriers will be put up at a cost of ₹5.54 crore to prevent waste dumping.
