Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has sent a heartfelt message to Lisandro Martinez after the defender suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury that will keep him out for months.

Martinez was forced off the pitch on a stretcher during United’s 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace. He was left lying on the ground before receiving treatment.

After the match, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim confirmed that the injury was serious. “I think it is a serious situation. A bad situation for us and especially for Licha. Now it is time for all of us to help Licha. He felt it and, when you are a player, you know when it is serious,” Amorim said.

The recovery time for a cruciate knee ligament injury is typically around nine months, meaning Martinez will be sidelined for a significant period. The injury came at a tough time for the club, as the transfer window had just closed on February 3, leaving United unable to sign a replacement.

In a show of support, De Gea shared several pictures of himself and Martinez during their time together at Old Trafford. The former goalkeeper wrote on Instagram: “As always you do things… Like a warrior,” with a heart emoji.

United’s full-back Diogo Dalot commented with two love heart emojis, while midfielder Casemiro posted a message on his Instagram stories. Casemiro shared a picture with Martinez and wrote: “Love you bro. You’ll come back stronger. A lot of encouragement, friend,” followed by a heart emoji.

Alejandro Garnacho also sent a message to his international teammate, saying: “You will come back stronger, our warrior,” with red heart and strong arm emojis.

Following the defeat to Crystal Palace, Amorim expressed how important Martinez is to the squad, both as a player and as a character. “Licha is really important for us, not just as a football player, but as a character, especially in this hard moment. Now it’s time to help Licha like he’s doing for so long. I think it’s a bad situation, let’s wait to assess things with the doctor but I think it’s a serious situation,” Amorim said.

Martinez’s injury is a big blow for United, but his teammates have shown their support, and the club will hope for a strong recovery for the Argentine defender.
