Microsoft is caving into the pressure of bringing the DeepSeek AI model to its Windows PCs that will be available if you have any of the Snapdragon X powered Windows laptops. The company has a deal with OpenAI which gives it first dibs on ChatGPT and other AI models from the AI giant, but Microsoft is clearly open to integrating other models, especially when you have a high demand in the market, for which DeepSeek is a strong participant.

The announcement this week is interesting because OpenAI was critical of how DeepSeek was built and even alleged that its own data was used and trained by the China-based AI model. DeepSeek is likely to have used a technique called distillation where the OpenAI model would have been used to train the DeepSeek R1 model which is now freely available to users, as claimed by the White House AI chief David Sacks, quoted in an interview earlier this month.

DeepSeek R1 For Windows Copilot Plus PCs: What You Get

The open source nature of DeepSeek allows giants like Microsoft to integrate the AI model into its own platform and make it available for free. You don’t need to add anything to run DeepSeek on the Copilot Plus PC and just have to select the AI model for your use case.

The Snapdragon X-powered PCs come with a neural processing unit (NPU) that powers the AI features and the Copilot chatbot that is based on the GPT 4 AI model. Microsoft says the Intel based Copilot Plus PCs will also support DeepSeek AI in the coming months.

The company says the Copilot Plus PCs are capable of letting you run these AI models and help developers build AI apps for the device and the platform. PCs in this segment are claimed to see battery life improvements and the AI model has been trained to minimise load on the hardware and give better efficiency.

The US government is clearly worried about the impact of DeepSeek AI, especially with its privacy policy which clearly states that the data is shared with servers in China. So, it would surely be concerned about how Microsoft is planning to keep the data secure for people who use the AI model on their PCs.
