Duncan Scott beats Leon Marchand to win World Cup 200m freestyle

Great Britain’s Duncan Scott beat France’s multiple world and Olympic champion Leon Marchand into second place in the men’s 200m freestyle on the final day of the short course World Cup event in Singapore.

The 27-year-old Scot, who had finished second behind Marchand, 22, in the 200m medley on Friday, added a second title of the meeting after also winning the men’s 400m freestyle in a new British record time.

He won Saturday’s 200m freestyle in one minute 39.83 seconds, 1.08 secs ahead of Marchand, while China’s Pan Zhanle was third.

Scott’s results in the third and final event of the series moves him up to third place in the men’s overall standings.

Marchand, who won four gold medals at the Paris Olympics during the summer, did enough to be crowned the men’s overall champion.

Switzerland’s Noe Ponti was second overall after closing his championships with victory in the men’s 50m butterfly.

America’s Kate Douglass, 22, took the women’s overall title after winning the 100m freestyle in Saturday’s finale, while compatriot Regan Smith was second after victory in the women’s 200m backstroke in a new world record time of 1:58.83.

Smith, also 22, also lowered her own world record in winning the 100m backstroke earlier in the meeting.
