Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot spoke with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, on the sidelines of the Paris Conference on Syria held on February 13.
During their conversation, the two Ministers reaffirmed their shared desire to work to preserve the ceasefire in Gaza, ensure the release of all hostages and secure a lasting peace based on the two-State solution – the only thing capable of guaranteeing the Israelis’ and Palestinians’ legitimate aspirations for peace and security.
Faced with the amount of total destruction in Gaza, the two Ministers rejected any solution that would involve the forced displacement of the Palestinian population, which would be a serious violation of international law and would destabilize neighboring countries. They emphasized their determination to work with all their partners to continue delivering humanitarian aid and to rebuild the enclave for the long term, based on a detailed, concrete “day after” plan that would include matters of governance and security.
The Ministers reaffirmed their desire to boost coordination on regional crises, particularly in Africa. They also noted our countries’ rich and multifaceted bilateral cooperation. Minister Jean-Noël Barrot reaffirmed France’s full support for Egypt’s stability.
