Former Chelsea coach and English legend Frank Lampard was appointed as the manager of Championship club Coventry City on Thursday.

The Chelsea legend, who began his managerial journey with Derby County in the year 2018, landed the top job at Chelsea in the year 2019 and remained at the helm of his beloved Blues until his dismissal in January 2021 midway through the season following a string of poor results.

He was replaced by Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, and the German head coach went on to clinch the elite European prize of the UEFA Champions League with the London-based side in an absolute heist.

He took over Everton in the year 2022 and helped them move away from relegation, but was handed the sack in 2023 as the Toffees slid down the table, and was replaced by Sean Dyche, who helped the Merseyside side remain in the English top-flight.

Lampard returned to Chelsea as the interim manager in the year 2023 after the London side parted ways with Tuchel and had to endure a tough spell under highly touted Graham Potter.

Lampard bridged the gap at Stamford Bridge ahead of the arrival of Mauricio Pochettinno, who was eventually replaced by current gaffer Enzo Maresca in the every-turning merry-go-round of the Chelsea head coach job.

Coventry owner Doug King opined that Lampard had a “clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level,” following the appointment.

“I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as head coach,” said King.

King went on to highlight Lampard’s tenure at Derby and suggested that the former England midfielder was aware of the challenges of the gruelling championship.

“Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this league to be successful,” King added.

“His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a club are striving to reach.”
