Google To Bring New ‘AI Replies’ Feature While Taking Calls: How it Works – News18
Last Updated:
Google’s new AI features are rolling out quickly with more use cases for Pixel owners and gradually to others.
The Call Screen feature on Google Pixel smartphones may soon be upgraded with additional AI capabilities. According to reports, the tech giant is developing a feature called “AI Replies” that will replace the standard responses found in the current Call Screen version with smart responses based on the caller’s words.
Since the feature is still in development, it won’t be available in the most recent version of the Phone app for Pixel devices, but it might eventually be included in the company’s devices.
With the Call Screen feature in the Phone app on Pixel devices, users can instruct Google Assistant to answer incoming calls and enquire as to why they were made. It is compatible with all Pixel smartphones and is available in a few regions (but not in India).
Google gave Call Screen the contextual replies feature last year, enabling users to reply to the caller if they didn’t want to answer. If the Call Screen function informed the user, for instance, that they were receiving a call regarding scheduling a visit to the doctor’s office, they had the option to accept or decline the appointment, and the on-device assistant might inform the caller of this.
Although the feature is helpful in some situations, it is not effective if the caller’s response is too complicated and has a fairly small range of possible responses.
Meanwhile, an app teardown by Android Authority showed that the company is working on “AI Replies” to improve contextual answers. According to the publication, AI may be used by the company to analyse the caller’s response and present the user with more pertinent responses. “Call Assist suggests new AI-powered smart replies based on the caller’s Call Screen responses,” as per an image, AI Replies is defined as.
Additionally, 9to5Google also investigated the Phone app on a Pixel smartphone to uncover additional proof of the capability. The publication found code strings indicating that the AI-generated responses were being referred to as “dobby” internally. Also, another section of code indicated that “dobby LLM” would power the feature.
Some of the AI features in the Google Pixel 9 series are already powered by Gemini Nano, which is thought to be the codename for this device. To power the feature, the company may additionally employ a different large language model. As of right now, Google has not disclosed any details regarding the potential release date of AI Replies on Call Screen.
