HC asks sessions court to complete trial in Abhimanyu case in nine months

The Kerala High Court on Friday directed the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court to commence trial in the Abhimanyu murder case and complete it in nine months.

The court issued the directive on a petition filed by Abhimanyu’s mother seeking a directive to expedite trial in the case.

The sessions court had earlier informed the High Court that it would take up the case for trial and complete it in nine months immediately after completion of the trial in the actor assault case.

Abhimanyu, 21, hailing from a tribal family in Idukki’s Vattavada, was stabbed to death by a gang allegedly involving members of the Campus Front of India at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, in July 2018. The incident was a sequel to a dispute between SFI and Campus Front activists over the placement of posters at the college.

Bhoopathy, mother of Abhimanyu, in her petition had pointed out that the case was still at the preliminary hearing stage. Even six years after the incident, charges had not been framed against the accused. The fact that the case had not made any progress with no prospect of the trial commencing in the near future was violative of the principles of criminal justice system, she had said.
