Grammy-winning rapper Snoop Dogg, renowned for his significant impact on hip-hop culture, is best known for his iconic 1990s hit Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang, a West Coast anthem. But did you know that Snoop Dogg isn’t his real name? The music legend was born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. and there’s an intriguing story behind how he adopted his famous stage name.

In November 2024, Snoop Dogg sat for a candid conversation with Kelly Clarson on her show and revealed the unknown story behind getting his stage name. A video from his appearance was posted on Instagram, in which the rapper was asked about the same. Talking about the amusing backstory, the American rapper credited his mother and the popular cartoon character Snoopy.

Snoop Dogg revealed that the on-screen cartoon character was a pivotal part of his childhood, so much so that his mother was convinced that her kid would soon start looking like him. He said, “Well, as a kid I watched Charlie Brown, yeah. You know, Charlie Brown was one of my favourites, and I watched Snoopy so much my mother was like, ‘You watch him so damn much you starting to look like him’,” leaving the host of the show in splits.

The rapper added, “And, I swear to you, my whole life. I had 50 years with my mother, and she never called me by my real name a day in her life. She called me Snoopy, Snoopy, Snoopy. That’s it, that’s all,” closing his sentence with an affectionate smile. This revealed his bond with his mother.

Soon, Kelly, known for her engaging style of discussion, posed another hilarious question to Snoop Dogg. She asked him whether his kids also called him “Snoopy”. In reply to the same, the American rapper quipped, “My daughter calls me ‘dad’,” and the host added, “That’s normal,” followed by a series of laughter. The hip-hop star continued, “My youngest son calls me ‘pops’. And my eldest son calls me when he needs the money.” The response made Kelly confirm that this is how things work, leaving a reels of laughter in the audience.

Coming to Snoop Dogg’s professional front, on December 13, he released his much-anticipated album Missionary. This album is a sequel to his 1993 debut, Doggystyle and marked Snoop Dogg’s first full-length collaboration with rapper and producer Dr Dre.
