The police investigating the death of a woman at Cherthala in Alappuzha on Thursday arrested her husband on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The arrested has been identified as Sony (49) of Cherthala municipality. The Cherthala police said that he was booked under Section 105 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Sony’s wife, Saji, died on February 9 after undergoing treatment at a hospital for over a month. His arrest followed a preliminary post-mortem report, which revealed that she had sustained a head injury, a skull fracture and internal bleeding, and these were identified as the cause of death. The woman allegedly sustained the injuries after Sony slammed her head against the wall and pushed her to the floor inside the house.
Earlier, the couple’s daughter filed a police complaint alleging that her mother succumbed to the injuries caused by an attack by Sony on January 8. The police, after registering a case of unnatural death based on the complaint, exhumed the body of Saji from the cemetery of St. Mary’s Forane Church, Muttom, for post-mortem examination on Wednesday.
The police said the family initially told doctors that she had sustained injuries after falling down the stairs.
