The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called a meeting on Friday, just a day before the results of the Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections. But it was not about the elections.
The meeting was scheduled for eight hours and meant to check on the progress in the states. On the same day, workshops were run simultaneously to help the BJP set its sights on the next BJP presidential election in mid-January.
BJP president JP Nadda general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh, general secretaries Vinod Tawde, Arun Singh and Dushyant Gautam were present. The meeting that started at 11 am went on till 7 pm.
The BJP has called all its state presidents and state general secretary (organisations) to understand by when 50% of the states can have their new state presidents and new teams in place – a constitutional requirement for the election for the BJP’s national president.
The BJP had set a target to complete the elections at all mandal-level units in India in November. But in Friday’s meeting, instructions have been given to conduct elections for mandal president by December 15 and district presidents by December 30, which is a slight delay than the scheduled time.
In today’s meeting, sources say, state presidents were audited about their states. Recently, the BJP tasted victory in Haryana by reaching out to farmers – a segment that was unhappy with the BJP. The saffron party has decided to share its success mantra with others.
On the sidelines of Friday’s meeting, a workshop for the Kiran unit was arranged at the BJP headquarters in Delhi.
However, who will become its next president, you ask, and even the senior leaders claim they are clueless.
“We are also getting to know through the media”, laughed one BJP general secretary, while adding it will be clear by mid-January.
