The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) celebrated its 46th foundation day on Sunday (February 2, 2025) at Gandhi Maidan in Dumka. Chief Minister Hemant Soren reached Dumka by charter plane to participate in the event with his wife and Gandey MLA Kalpana Soren. Mr. Soren was given a grand welcome at the airport and a guard of honour.

A rally was organised, led by Rajmahal MP Vijay Hansda and Dumka MLA Basant Soren, younger brother of the Jharkhand Chief Minister. Thousands of party workers participated, and marched from Santhal Pargana Mahavidyalaya to Gandhi Maidan.

Party workers and his supporters from all six districts of Santhal Pargana, Dumka, Deoghar, Jamtara, Pakur, Sahibganj, and Godda were present at the rally in large numbers.

Mr. Soren, who is also the executive president of the party, expressed his gratitude to party workers. The city was filled with hoardings and banners along with Toran Dwars.

People’s enthusiasm

Dumka MLA Basant Soren, who organised the event, said that the energy shown by the people in the recent Jharkhand assembly elections has strengthened the party.

He asserted that the JMM is working day and night to meet the expectations of people. He said that owing to political instability last year, the JMM was unable to celebrate the event properly.

“Water, forest, and land is the mantra of our party; it is important to save the tribals who are natives of Jharkhand. We believe that this is the ideal time to realise Dishom Guru’s (Shibu Soren, JMM founder) dreams,” Mr. Basant Soren said told the media.

Mr. Soren’s JMM-led alliance recently retained Jharkhand’s 81-member State Assembly, the first time in the history of Jharkhand that the same leader has won back-to-back elections.

Of the 81 assembly seats, the JMM-led INDIA bloc won 56 seats. The NDA managed only 24, lower than its tally in the last assembly election. The JMM won 34, Congress 16, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) four, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation two.

In the NDA, the BJP won 21. Its alliance partners – the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and Janata Dal (United) – got one seat each.

CM keeping promises

Most of the leaders who spoke pointed out that Mr. Soren is fulfilling promises he made during the assembly election. They were hopeful that Jharkhand would achieve its potential under the leadership of Hemant Soren.

Women were also present in large numbers. Mr. Soren’s ambitious Mukhyamantri Maiya Samman Yojna scheme played an important role in the INDIA bloc’s victory.

Launched last year in August, the scheme initially provided ₹1,000 to women from 18 to 50 years. The ruling alliance then increased the honorarium from ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 in December 2024.
