Man arrested for attempting to steal from ATM

A 24-year-old man was arrested by the Moghalpura police for attempting to steal cash from an ATM in Shalibanda on February 15. Though the ATM was damaged, no cash was stolen.

Police said that the accused was identified as Honmane Kashinath, 24, a panipuri vendor.

“Struggling with severe addiction to online gambling games, Kashinath accumulated debts amounting to ₹30 lakh, borrowed through friends, and online loan applications. Driven by desperation to repay his debts, he planned the ATM burglary,” said the police.

A team of Moghalpura police examined footage from 40 to 50 CCTV cameras around the area, tracing his movements leading up to the crime. Their efforts resulted in the arrest of Kashinath on Friday.

Meanwhile, the police advised bank officials to strengthen ATM security by improving CCTV surveillance, ensuring proper lighting around ATMs, conducting regular inspections, installing alarm systems to detect tampering, and deploying security personnel in high-risk areas.
