Mohammed Shami Needs 5 Wickets In 1st ODI Against England To Break Mitchell Starc’s World Record – News18

Since making his ODI debut for India against Pakistan in Delhi on January 6, 2013, Shami has accounted for the dismissal of 195 batters in 101 matches played so far.

In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami will lead India’s fast bowling attack in the three-match ODI series against England, the series opener of which is scheduled to take place at Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday, February 6. During the first match of the series, 34-year-old Shami, who last played a 50-over match for India in the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia on November 19, 2023, will have a chance to create history.

If Shami, who has 195 wickets to his name in 101 ODIs played so far, manages to take at least five wickets in Nagpur, then he will break Australian pacer Mitchell Starc’s world record and become the fastest bowler in the world to take 200 wickets in ODIs. Starc, who is one of the best bowlers of all time, picked up his 200th ODI wicket in the 102nd innings of the 102nd match.

The first ODI between India and England on Thursday will be Shami’s 102nd ODI for India as well, but in terms of innings, he will bowl for the 101st time in the 50-over format of the game. He didn’t get a chance to bowl in the India-Australia ODI match at Sydney Cricket Ground on January 26, 2015.

The record of being the fastest bowler to take 200 wickets in ODIs for India is held by Ajit Agarkar. Agarkar picked up his 200th wicket in the 133rd match, which was played against Bangladesh in Dhaka on December 26, 2004.
