Premier League side Chelsea halted a five-game winless run with a 3-1 triumph over Wolves on Tuesday as strikes from Tosin Adarabioyo, Noni Madueke and Marc Cucurella ensured the Blues would pick up all three points on offer.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was chuffed with his side’s performance to snap the slump they had to experience in the past couple of weeks in the English top-flight.
Adarabioyo opened the scoring on the day before Wolves pegged back to level terms thanks to a Matt Doherty goal in first-half stoppage time. However, Cucurella found the back of the net at the hour mark to restore the hosts’ advantage before Madueke put the result beyond any doubt with another strike five minutes later.
“The performance until 40 minutes was very good, then the last five minutes we struggled. They scored a goal and we lost a bit of confidence, which was something that has happened a few times this season,” Maresca said.
“We need to learn to manage these situations better,” he opined.
“In the second half we started well and scored the goals. Overall I think we deserved to win the game,” the Italian said.
“We reacted well in the second half. After five games without a win it is not easy to do that. So it was important to win the game,” the 44-year-old said.
The Blues stand fourth in the league with 40 points from 22 games, only behind table-topers Liverpool, second-placed Arsenal and surprise third Nottingham Forest.
When quizzed if Chelsea’s defensive instability was the reason they aren’t placed higher, the Italian denied the claims stating that only a very few teams have conceded fewer goals than them this season.
“If I’m not wrong only four or five teams in the league have conceded less than us. So why ask about a defensive problem?” Maresca said.
“I think the balance is quite good between offensive and defensive. Then you can concede a goal in any way,” the CFC gaffe added.
Maresca also stood up for goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after the Spaniard gifted Wolves the equaliser by dropping a corner that led to Doherty’s strike.
Chelsea conceded the lone goal they did against Wolves following an error from keeper Robert Sanchez, but the Blues boss backed his shot-stopper.
“It’s part of our job when you make some mistakes,” he said.
“Robert has saved us many times, it happens, no problem,” the Italian concluded.
