Discussing the moment he felt his career began to falter, Schofield explained: “There is a member of my family who I refuse to name and acknowledge who committed a heinous crime and I had no qualms whatsoever in shopping him.

“We were praised by the police and we got justice done. Even when they knew all of the facts the papers made me to be some complicit agent. My poor mum, I had to tell her about that member of the family and I had to go through everything with the hierarchy at ITV so they knew that I hadn’t done anything wrong.”

Going on to the moment he was fired from This Morning the day before his brothers sentencing, he revealed: “My agent called, ‘I am afraid you have been let go from This Morning’.

“That’s it, it’s done, your not going back on Monday’. Why would I be sacked for something somebody else did. I was fired because of him. It was better for the channel and I agreed to say I resigned because it was better for everyone.

“I was always open and honest. I was fired for the bad publicity of someone else’s crime and a week later I blew my own wheels off with everything else. I’ve done a full mia culpa. I came clean about my affair.

Before he was taken back to the mainland, Schofield was asked what was next for him, leaving him to reveal: “There is a lot of freedom in not giving a s**t. There is a lot of freedom, say what you want, do what you want. Honestly I don’t give a s**t.

“What’s next for me? Nothing. I am happy with nothing. I have family, friends and a dog. I’m not saying I am done but never in a million years would I go back to daytime TV. This is me saying ‘Thank you, I have absolutely loved it’.”
