Poco X7 is the new mid-range phone from the brand that looks to appeal buyers with its performance and value proposition.
The new x-series phone from Poco brings some upgrades.
Poco has a clear strategy in the market with its products and most of that revolves around performance-centric devices at an accessible price. The X series from Poco epitomises this focus and the new X7 series launched in India this year looks to continue that promise with more finesse. The Poco X7 is the model that we got a closer look at and the new phone is priced in the lower mid-range of under Rs 25,000.
Poco and Xiaomi these days work more closely in the market but Poco has its own following which is likely to help the brand pick up the tab with the X7 but does the new phone stand up to the demands of the users and deliver it in the package? We’ve tried our best to find the answer.
Design Does The Talking
Poco phones have generally looked good over the years and the X7 builds on that tradition with more finesse on offer. The sleek design and weight of less than 200 grams make it easy and comfortable to use with one hand.
The tall profile usually causes discomfort but the X7 does not face that issue which is a good point. We got the green variant which has a nice appeal but most people have liked the yellow-black finish model. The curve-ish layout is another aspect that is good to have in this price range.
Screen That Deserves Your Attention
Poco is offering a 3D curved AMOLED display on the X7 which is a first from the brand. It sports a 6.67-inch screen with 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision and HDR10 certified.
Having all this baked into the display delivers a pleasing viewing experience with sharp and bright colours and the usual deep blacks on these panels. This is one of the better display units that you can ask for at this price and the X7 did surprise us in that regard.
It comes 3,000 nits of peak brightness which is not very high but outdoor visibility is not going to be an issue. The other good thing about the X7 is that you get an in-display fingerprint sensor that works even if your hands are wet.
Makes Us Want More
The X7 is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Ultra chipset that comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. The general performance of this device is comparable to the others in this range and daily usage will not pose any issues, but we noticed the benchmark scores were lower than expected. Even while gaming, we saw games stutter in higher settings and we feel that Poco can fix them with an update.
Having the 120Hz display should ideally be a smooth ride but we came across some lags which again should be fixed with an update. But we were pleased to see the phone remain cool in most situations, which might change when the weather in Delhi goes up.
Talking about the OS, for some reason Poco has decided to offer Android 14 on the X7 and reserve the Android 15 based HyperOS 2.0 version on the X7 Pro. What this means is that X7 will only get 2 OS updates because the third one is already available on the other variant. Even then, one has to highlight the amount of bloatware packed into the device which is the most we have come across on a phone in recent months and they even annoy with notifications if you don’t disable/uninstall them.
You get some AI features via Gemini but seeing this phone run on the 2023 version was hard to understand.
Camera Ticks?
The X7 has a dual camera system of a 50MP wide sensor with OIS and an 8MP ultrawide angle lens. The main camera does well when the light is bright but takes a hit when it needs further support from the hardware with softer details.
Some might find the colours to be boosted but the extra vibrancy might work for some of you. Fair to say that the X7 is not going to win any contests with its camera prowess but still gets the job ticking.
Runs Long Enough
The X7 packs a 5,500mAh battery which might not be evident with the size of the phone but the charging speed has come down from 67W to 45W this year.
The battery test results didn’t give us much hope but the real usage numbers did surprise us. You can easily get the phone to last for over a day and once it runs out, you take around 50 minutes to fully charge. Not the best in this range but still good enough for most people.
Poco X7 scores big with its design, display quality and the overall performance even though it could still go up a notch further in levels. The camera does fine but the OS support could have been better and falls short because of the amount of bloatware which does not help with the experience.
