Samsung To Rival Meta With Its Own Ray Ban-Like Smart XR Glasses: All Details – News18
Last Updated:
Samsung is looking to enter the smart glasses segment with Google and Qualcomm on its side to take on Meta.
Samsung is gearing up to expand its smart wearable lineup with the launch of its new XR Smart Glasses, expected to debut in the third quarter of 2025 as per reports. While the tech giant has not officially released details about the device yet, a research report from China suggests that these upcoming XR glasses could have similarities with Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. These could include integrated smart features, such as the ability to interact with the environment or display information, enhancing the wearable tech experience for users.
Samsung Smart Glasses: What To Expect
The Samsung XR Glasses will be made in partnership with Google and likely to be powered by a Qualcomm AR1 chipset and an NXP semiconductor as the auxiliary processing unit, which is similar to the AR1 chip powering the Meta Ray Ban glasses.
Additionally, it is expected to be equipped with a 12MP camera with a Sony IMX681 CMOS image sensor and pack a 155mAh battery, also similar to what Meta offers with its smart glasses.
The camera on these glasses is expected to be capable of scanning QR codes, recognising gestures and performing “human recognition functions.” These functions could be achieved using the wearable’s pre-installed Gemini large language model (LLM), developed in partnership with Google.
The South Korean tech giant, in its earnings announcement last month, announced that the Samsung XR headset will be launching in 2025, however, the exact timeline and pricing of the device were not divulged . Samsung might use the Galaxy Unpacked event early next year to show us a teaser of the product, something we also saw with the Galaxy Ring this year. Unlike Meta, one can hope that Samsung’s vast resources will allow the company to bring its product to more regions.
The Meta Ray Ban smart glasses are available at a steep $299 (Rs 25,000 approx) in select regions, with no launch date for the Indian market highlighted. Samsung needs 2025 to be a big year and another attempt from the brand could happen in the form of a tri-fold smartphone, mimicking the Huawei model that went on sale in China recently.
