Three college students from Tamil Nadu were killed and 24 others injured after a tourist bus carrying them overturned at Echo Point, near Mattupetty, in Munnar on Wednesday.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 2.30 p.m. The deceased have been identified as Tamil Nadu Nagercoil Kanakappapuran residents Aathika Ramu (19), Venika Ramesh (19), and Suthan Nityanandan (19). The three were BSc Computer students of Scott Christian College at Nagercoil.
According to the police, the bus was carrying the students from the college on a trip to Munnar. The team reached the hill station in the morning and after a visit to the Mattupetty dam was on its way to Kundala. According to eyewitnesses, the speeding bus lost control and overturned while negotiating a curve near Echo Point.
According to the police, 37 students and three teachers were on the bus. Venika and Aathika died at a private hospital in Munnar while Suthan died on way to Theni Medical College Hospital (MCH) in Tamil Nadu. Another seriously injured student Kevin (20) has been admitted to the Theni MCH.
Twenty-three students and teachers who sustained injuries have been admitted to a private hospital in Munnar. The local people, the police, and tourists in the area engaged in the rescue operations.
The bodies have been shifted to the Adimaly taluk hospital for post-mortem examination.
