Narendra Modi was a booth worker for the BJP before he rose to become the chief minister and then the prime minister. On Saturday, as his final message to the party’s workers in the Maharashtra campaign before he leaves for an official tour abroad, PM Modi offered valuable tips from his ground experience.

Terming BJP’s workers as “Modi’s ambassadors”, the prime minister asked them to shoot videos on mobile phones of the beneficiaries of government schemes and “make them viral” on social media as such video testimonials from the actual beneficiaries work much better. He also told BJP workers to not go like a ‘jaloos’ [procession] to houses and just hand over a pamphlet to people in a hurry while asking them to vote for BJP.

“Do not rush… go and sit inside the house with a family and understand their mind closely. The aim must be to get them to vote in our favour and ensure they vote (vote parivartit karna aur matdaan karvana),” Modi said.

The prime minister asked workers to not argue with people but converse with them patiently, advising them that “vivaad nahi karna hai, samvad karna hai [We don’t have to argue but have a conversation]”. He also advised booth workers to take an influential person along — like a doctor, teacher or a saint — as people may tend to listen to them more. “When you go to people, you should know what benefit they have got from the government, and you must begin the discussion from there,” the prime minister said. Modi also advised that a list be made of people who may be planning to travel on voting day — and they must be persuaded to vote early on the day and then leave for their travel.

The prime minister also recalled his own days as a booth worker and advised them to ensure ‘utsav ka mahaul’ (celebration) on voting day and take out small processions playing instruments to encourage people to come out and vote, and help them reach the polling booth. He said people see BJP workers as “Modi’s ambassadors” as they feel that what they tell the workers will reach the PM.

“Ensure you have women in your group. I depend on you for ground feedback… keep the talking points ready on your phone when you meet people. Speak to them on local and national issues,” Modi told BJP workers.
