Meta had a rough start on December 12 as WhatsApp, Instagram and even Facebook went down, making it hard for millions of users to access their accounts on these platforms. The outage affected people across the globe, including India, where people stopped receiving messages starting midnight on Thursday.

Similarly, Instagram and WhatsApp outages resulted in issues for people in the early morning in the United States. Popular outage tracker Downdetector confirmed these developments, which was also notified by the respective platforms, keeping their users updated through posts on social media platform X.

WhatsApp And Instagram Down: Reason For Outage

Meta did not share the full details for all its apps going down on Thursday, but the platforms did confirm the issue via their social posts.

The Downdetector platform suggests more people in the US faced the outage for a longer period, while these apps were down in India for over an hour or so. Majority of the reports on WhatsApp is related to their issues with sending messages, which prompted most people to reboot their Wi-Fi router

It is likely that all these Meta-owned platforms faced the same technical issue which caused this down time for billions this week. We are hoping to hear more about this from the company which gives us some clarity for the outage.
