‘You’re Lady Killer’: Kalyan Banerjee’s Remark On Scindia Sparks Row; BJP Demands Action – News18

Scindia condemned Banerjee’s remark and also met Lok Sabha Speaker to discuss the comments

A group of women MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) met Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday, demanding action against TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee for calling Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia a “lady killer”, remark for which he later apologised.

Banerjee made the remark during a heated exchange with Scindia in the Lok Sabha. The altercation between the two led to a disruption, forcing the session to be adjourned till 5 pm.

Scindia condemned the remarks and rejected Banerjee’s apology, asserting that personal attacks would not be tolerated.

“Kalyan Banerjee has said sorry. We all come to this House with the spirit of contributing to the nation’s development,” Scindia said adding, however, there will be no compromise on self-respect.

“If you will get personal, be prepared for the response also…I do not accept his apology,” he stated.

What led to the heated discussion?

The heated exchange began when Kalyan Banerjee spoke during a discussion on amendments to the Disaster Management Act, accusing the BJP-led central government of non-cooperation during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In response, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai countered, praising Prime Minister Modi for his efforts and claiming that the West Bengal government had hindered vaccine transportation.

Scindia stood up and supported Rai, stating that India had emerged as a “Vishwa Bandhu” during the pandemic and helped countries in need.

Following this, Banerjee attacked Scindia and made the “lady killer” remarks against the minister which were expunged by Speaker Om Birla.

Kalyan A Repeat Offender, Andhra BJP Chief Slams

Andhra Pradesh BJP president Daggubati Purandeswari also condemned the repeated comments made by TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee, particularly his remark calling Jyotiraditya Scindia a “lady killer.”

She emphasised that such comments were unbecoming of a parliamentarian, especially from someone representing a state led by a woman, directing it towards West bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “He is repetitively habituated to passing comments like this which is very offending to the women,” she added.

Purandeswari further added that the women MPs had met with the Speaker and Kiren Rijiju, urging harsh action against Banerjee to set an example and ensure respect for women in the Parliament.
